Hatari Lodge, which includes what was once the private residence of actor and
adventurer Hardy Krüger, is located on the northern edge of Arusha National
Park. Framed by Mount Kilimanjaro and its volcanic counterpart, the
4,566 m high Mount Meru, the area around the lodge was used as
the setting for "Hatari", the famous safari film. Since then the estate
itself has been redesigned and modernised.
Rooms/Accommodation:
The Hatari has 8 spacious rooms, each with their own fireplaces and large
baths. The rooms have been furnished in the style of the '60s and '70s, and
decorated with loving care. The Honeymoon Room lies off to the side of the
Momella Marsh through a large panoramic window. Over 100 buffalo, giraffes,
waterbuck, bushbuck and warthogs come to graze there daily. The bathroom also
provides its own wonderful wildlife vista. The salon and dining room are
situated in the oldest farmhouse. Here guests are treated to delicious meals
prepared by Marlies Gabriel, who, with husband Jörg, leaseholds the lodge,
while Jörg himself tells fireside tales of the estate's history and lavishes
guests with the sort of inside tips that only someone who knows Tanzania from
tip to toe can offer. The lodge also has a stylish bar, which can be used
indoors or outdoors.
The breakfast terrace lays on a thrilling view of Mount Kilimanjaro. The
glades of Momella, a marshland savannah, run from directly beneath the
terrace and can be reached along a specially erected walkway. There is an
observation platform from which guests can watch the animals that come to
drink at the watering-holes. Guests can also enjoy a classic sundowner, with
Kilimanjaro or Meru as the sublime backdrop. A 15-minute walk away is the
Hippo Pool - a small lake in which hippopotami bathe.
Activities:
Hatari offers its own airport transfers, animal-watching outings and guided
hiking tours in Arusha National Park, as well as canoe rides on the Momella
lakes. It is also the ideal base camp for mountain-climbers off to tackle
either Kilimanjaro or Meru.
